What is this company coming to?
The company that I work for is making some changes around food safety; but some of the changes that are being made to me does not have anything to do with the safety of food or should I say make sense. Going forward (by 2010) they following things will take affect.
80 cameras to be installed (warehouse, parking lot, in and out of other areas of the plant,i.e. hallways, lab, mechanic shop, etc…the building is not big enough for this number.
employees lockers will have to be checked at random
a COUNTER will be installed for entrance and exit
if you wear any type of jewelry, you will no longer be able to walk thru the plant, you have to take a whole new (longer) route
either shave your facial hair or wear a full covered beard, hair net
They say it’s for a control issue of the company, but I think its more of a control of the employees of just monitoring employees behavior, it’s becoming more of a prison system.
Certain foods removed from the vending machine (like P-Nuts), they say they are contaminated.
Need some feedback as to what the real deal is.
Beverage Company. Alot of the changes per se is from a big contract that they won.
The question of you, is what is your product. There must have been some question of tampering.

For the peanuts, if you have a co-worker that is allergic, then they will sue the company if you buy the peanuts. Blame people who sue, not your company. As for the rest of the items, depends on what type of product you make.
Jewelry can get snagged on equipment. Most people who use industrial saws for example will always remove wedding rings. It is just a safety thing. I know you may not see it, but talk to an insurance person for your industry, and I bet by putting in these types of policies, may be done to control workmans comp. This is a very large expense to a company.
As for the cameras, once again, depends on what you make. Maybe people are stealing from the warehouse. If you really think someone is going to spend all day looking at a camera, to see if you are goofing off, then quit goofing off. I suspect you have a supervisor already whose job this is.
Lots of regulations get passed over the years, and everyone thinks they are a good idea, until someone actually has to implement them. Then you realize, sometimes common sense gets tossed, but a law was passed, and no one wants to get sued.
Communicate your concerns to your supervisor, and either learn to live with it, or get a new job.
