A business we were dealing with has shut its doors, with our equipment inside. How do I get it out?
Our family operates a small vending business. We have a pop and snack machine at a business location (part of a large chain).
For two weeks now the door is closed, and locked, but nothing is posted on the door. The phone just rings with no answer. Head office also states that their office is closed and their mail box is too full to leave a message. All of their websites in the chain are temporarily unavailable.
Can I get our machine out? How do I find who to contact? I have not been able to find any information about this business officially closing, but everything is leading me in that direction.
Any help would be appreciated.
The only person who can enter a building without a court order is the owner or a fire marshall. If you have a friend who is a fire marshall you can get into the building or he can at least open it for you. Absent that you need to go through a legal process which starts with making demand, then filing a lien with the county court after 30 days, then getting a sherriff to open it for you.
If the building is not owned but only rented by the business you had it in then you may be able to contact the landlord. Go to the county courthouse and look up the owner and try to contact them, explain the situation, etc.
If your machines are clearly marked with your name on it then you may even be able to ask the cops to open the building for you. Be careful though that you check the building everyday or have someone watch it cause they may come some time and move out suddenly.
If your contract says you can enter the premises to retrieve your property then you can just go the police station or the sheriffs office and they can allow you to enter. If you don't have that in your contracts then you better put it in your new ones.
Good luck.

Let me ask my father and get back to you. He's a CEO. Check your e-mail in a bit.

Find out who the landlord is for the property and contact them.

I would start by making a call to your local sheriff's office. Tell them the situation, and they can either get someone from the business to allow you inside, or refer you to someone who can. Be sure to have signed contracts or other information handy which will prove the equipment is yours.

I would call your local police station and have them give you there opinion. If the person violated any type of contract or isnt paying you then the police should be allowed to "break in" and get your item back
