These have many takers with fresh graduates and even experienced candidates finding career fairs a great way to search and match their profiles to dream jobs. Yes, that’s ‘jobs’ not ‘job’ since hundreds of companies and head-hunting executives come to these professionally organized career fairs to scout for fresh talent and senior recruitments as well besides getting to meet a wide talent-pool of candidates on one day (or even spread across several) for specialized jobs.

It makes their work of scouting the best brains in the business that much easier as so many qualified candidates register themselves with the organizers of the career fairs to avail the best offers and thus head-hunters get their choice of top talent under one roof! Besides, the stigma of losing a job or changing jobs has long been shrugged off with the new-world opening up to new ways to encourage trade, commerce, personal growth and larger visionary schemes that what was once taken as a sign of being unreliable or disloyal to a company is now regarded as a smart career move i.e. switching gears to stay up with the times!

Also, career fairs offer thousands of good jobs with varying pay scales and perks with each company vying with not one but many rivals to nab the best potential candidates for themselves that employees are spoilt for choice when it comes to considering which offer to actually take up!

Those looking out for a change of scene, a new challenge or opportunities for growth in their chosen profession or even those wanting to try their hand at something completely different find career fairs a great place to begin their job-hunting officially and openly. Besides those searching for a new career, even those stuck in a rut at work and those wondering if they are worth a ‘fatter pay packet’ or ‘a wider job role’ can find out the truth for themselves by visiting the stalls of various companies looking to hire.

No local newspaper with dedicated weekly employment sections can hope to compete with the diverse and wide-ranging job offers that are up for the taking at the annual events the professional career fairs turn out to be; some even have fantastic sponsorships from big companies backing them besides snacks and vending machines to set the mood for free-wheeling interviews in a comfortable atmosphere.

The biggest advantage for candidates looking out for new jobs at career fairs is the vast choice before them from the hundreds of potential business concerns looking out for new people before them and the open choice of checking out each one and applying for different jobs at the same time.

At times, career fairs are held at hotels or exhibition grounds usually reserved for social or cultural events, but sometimes these are also held in large shopping malls. At these types of venues, there may be booths set up by different potential employers who have trained personnel manning the counters to give basic company information and explain job profiles to the interested candidates, especially those companies looking at volume hiring.

Still others may also have executives to process candidate applications and others to conduct onsite interviews, so a lot of time is saved during the hiring process, which is welcomed by candidate and HR alike.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” is the quote most likely to be heard in cubicles, stairwells and lobby vending machines across a spectrum of organizations and a diversity of voices. At a time when a financial baseball bat is being used to loft long, arching drives that descend just south of both foul lines, many are left wondering why bother getting off the bench when the outcome of the at-bat is already known. Many would argue that it is one of the most non-discriminatory financial tidal waves to ever flood the three economic class levels. It is the late Marvin Gaye’s ‘Inner City Blues’ moved east and transformed to ‘Any City Blues’ and it still “Makes me want holler, throw up both my hands!” While it may be a good topic for an afternoon talk show intervention, it only “Escalates the holler and wring both my hands.”Â

In the center of this storm is a stark reality. Whining, blaming and ignoring won’t solve problems that ‘we’ve never seen before’ and wishing it would go away, won’t make it go away. Decisive action is movement toward the uncertainty with an eye fixed on not being a small victim but searching for those small victories. The way is shaped by the actions of business, government, non-profits, educational institutions and the collected thinking of individuals committed to forging ahead on a path less traveled, less known, but more promising. It requires, what consultant, researcher and doctoral student, Tracy Flaggs refers to as, ‘Courageous Leadership. The courage to lead during unprecedented times is measured by the will and determination of those who do more than just wait to see a silver lining, but have the curiosity and willingness to search for opportunities behind the silver lining. When the door closes on a darkened path, the only way to go is forward.

Every path to opportunity has its share of obstacles and during this “I’ve never seen anything like this before,” moment in history, many of those obstacles sit in cubicles waiting for the next wave to hit as opposed to trying another path. Courageous Leaders recognize that there are many who willingly allow the storm to wash them away, but will, staunchly, stand in opposition to efforts made to move the organization forward. They see the past as an anchor that holds things in place until the storm passes, without realizing that when the storm passes, the landscape has changed. The familiar landscape that was once feeding ground for several traditionally solvent industries, have been transformed and require a different kind of nurturing. The leadership needed is more than just an abstract notion. It is a framework for shaping the mind-set, skill-set and attitude of employees who do more than just ‘ride out the storm.’ It is not the storm that is pushing you back, but the unwillingness to, collectively, row upstream.

When things are calm, the wind is light and the sun shines brightly on the deeds of individuals, courage is an easy topic to discuss and even easier to demonstrate. Comfort is found in the stability and predictability of ‘life in the good lane.’ Heroic acts of charity and good will are common place and spirits run high because ‘we’ve seen things like that before.” Courage unseats heroism when the way is darkened and the path bends. Leadership is about looking through the storm and onto the horizon where the first ray of sunlight brings with it a new path and the promise of unforeseen opportunities. It is an action that goes beyond short-term quarterly measures and immediate return on investment. The activities needed to move individuals and organizations through a turbulent storm require more than just simple statements about survival, they require acts of courage.

Passive income is the holy grail of automated income and lifestyle design. If what you are truly seeking is time freedom so that you can enjoy your time spent here (instead of working) then what you really want is a way to make passive income.

What are some examples of passive income? Well many people argue that there is no such thing, that in order for you to make money then real wealth must be generated in the form of work or labor at some point. While this might be true, we can still put things on a continuum of passive income on one end, and active work on the other end.

For example, earning interest on a big pile of savings is pretty much 100 percent passive. Likewise, if you own a business and you pay someone a salary to manage and handle all aspects of that business, then the money earned from that business is pretty much passive. The only thing you have to do is “manage the manager.” It’s entirely hands off for you and for the most part you don’t have to lift a finger.

And of course there is the other end of the spectrum where you are slaving away for 40 hours plus each week at your day job, trading away the hours of your life for dollars so that you can continue to live in comfort. That is the ugly end of the spectrum, the one that all of you probably know too well.

So how can we shift towards more passive income? How can we get off the slave labor merry-go-round?

What are some of these coveted passive income opportunities?

In order to uncover those and pursue them, you will have to do some upfront work. Yes this goes against the idea of “passive” but essentially we want to build a money making system that continues to pay us over and over again.

One way to do that is with vending machines. Buy some vending machines, fill them with stock, secure a location for them, and let the money roll in. Yes there are some steps involved there, as well as some up front investment, but there are people out there who make a good living with this. There is also maintenance involved as you either have to stock the machines and collect the money yourself or pay someone else to do it. But it’s an idea; a system that can be scaled out to generate alternate income.

The internet provides systems like this that are ripe for passive income. Anyone can start a blog for free and then monetize it with advertisements. If you can build traffic to such a website then you can make money from the advertising. The beauty of a system like this is that there is almost infinite scale and an infinite amount of topics with which to target. Not only that but you can certainly learn how to do all this for free simply by browsing the web.

It is true that such a system is not passive but it is quite a ways down the scale towards being passive. If you can build up a network of money making websites then eventually you can pay someone else to manage them for you and the income will be truly passive at that point. As it is now I have a very respectable part time income coming in from only three and half hours of work per week using these ideas.

I got this thing in the mail, basically a "blah blah blah, make thousands while sitting on your ass" kind of thing. Its inviting me and one guest to go to a free lunch at the Marriott while we listen to some pitch about "amazing money making opportunities", as the letter puts it. Naturally, I’m skeptical. But the letter says it not a sales seminar, that you shouldn’t even bring your check book because there’s nothing to buy. They say you’ll come away with valuable information. So I went online and read some articles about it, with mixed reviews, the majority leaning towards negative. But there was one comment from a man who said he’d done vending machine sales for decades, and he said "It was NOT too good to be true. It was the laziness, ignorance, and OUTRIGHT stupidity of prospects that caused this business not to work." And he wasn’t the only one that said it. So it sounds like this doesn’t work for most people, but it can if you’re not lazy and work hard at it. So, I’m thinking about going to the seminar (with extremely skeptical expectations) but I’m still concerned its just a scam. Is there anyone that’s done this, or at least gone to a seminar, that can tell me about it from experience?
Also, the main complaint I’m hearing is that the potential profits are misrepresented.

You are going to be pressured to fill out an application – which naturally will include much of your personal information: name, address, phone number, etc. If they are REALLY bold, they will ask for your social security number and drivers license number. I think most of these types of things are information gathering events rather than being anything that would actually profit you.
———
The positive testimonials are coming from the people who stand to make money off either you signing up or giving them your personal information. Stay away, in my opinion.

Illegal immigration is a very contentious subject. This year it will be even more so as millions of Americans have become unemployed or are facing the "chopping block."

I always have been insulted when individuals who are pro-illegal immigrants try to logic out why one group of people can break one set of laws while the rest of us should be subject to the exact same laws. For example, the City of Chicago has proclaimed itself to be a sanctuary city. We have individuals who get upset if the police do stings and arrest and take the cars of people who are in this country illegally and driving without a license. Yet we recently had an alderman proclaim that the city should take the cars of American citizens who leave traffic court and drive after being told to not do so. Where is the fairness?

I recently spent several months working in a Chicago public school where the student population was half black and half Hispanic. As I walked down the hallways, the classrooms for grades kindergarten through third looked like something out of a movie prior to Brown vs. Board of Education. The classrooms for first graders, for example, had all the black children in one room while all the Hispanic children were in a separate classroom.

Why? Because six years prior, two children were born in the same city and same hospital. The black child went home where he/she learned English even if it was the Ebonics’ version. The other child went home with parents who didn’t speak English and may be in this country illegally. That child learned Spanish as their first language.

When the time came to go to school, the Hispanic parents were allowed to choose a bilingual education program, even if the child is functional in English.

Wait a second. If the Hispanic children are getting bilingual education, shouldn’t the black kids be getting the same opportunity to become bilingual by learning Spanish at the same time the Hispanic children are learning English? Where is the fairness?

Recently, a man testified before congress regarding his daughter who was killed while sitting in her car at a red light. Her car was hit by a drunk driver, who was an illegal immigrant. The father referred to the people listed on the ICE database of illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds as "banditos." The father was subsequently chastised by Congressman Luis Gutierrez for using the term "banditos." Interestingly enough, it was not because the congressman could point to the term as being derogatory, but because he has chosen to pursue the interest of illegal immigrants over those of U.S. citizens. He was more concerned with how the illegal immigrants were being portrayed than he was about a U.S. citizen being killed by someone who shouldn’t have been in the country to begin with. Where is the fairness?

I have watched while a friend of mine lost his restaurant business. Every day he was visited by the city and issued fines for violations that had nothing to do with his food handling. Fines for signage violation. Fines because his video game didn’t have a current license even though it was unplugged and facing backwards so that no one could use it. Yet, every day on the streets of Austin, I am seeing unlicensed and unsanitary corn carts sitting on corners vending food. There is no running water to wash hands and, even worse, where do they use the bathroom when they stand on a corner for hours on end?

I saw on North Avenue, by the soon-to-be opened new Menards, a man cooking tacos on the city’s sidewalk. I am sure we have tons of Americans who could also put a BBQ pit on a cart and stand on a corner and sell food. Yet it doesn’t happen because the city enforces food-handling laws against citizens but not against others. Where is the fairness?

As this year’s marches occur, I am anxious to see how illegal immigration will be portrayed. As Americans have lost jobs, houses and their version of the American dream, will we as a country still be gullible enough to believe that there are jobs that we won’t do?

I’m with you almost 100% of the time! I hope US citizens are beginning to wake up and are becoming so fed up with the bs as usual, they will take their anger to challenge the illegal marchers! I hope this year is the year of escalation which will prove the majority of citizens demand their removal and will do it themselves, if our government is not going to do so!

Those companies usually make their money selling you the machines and do so by promoting the ‘dream’. If you’re serious about vending, buy used machines much cheaper and learn the ropes the right way. Don’t buy new machines and blindly enter that industry. It’s tough and cut throat but can be profitable if you’re smart.
